Faulty SM57! Been broken since day 1. new
      #988244 - 18/05/12 03:58 PM
Okay, I've decided to tackle something thats been bugging me for 10+ years.

I have a 10 year old 57 that hasn't worked since the day we got it from Thomann. I have NO IDEA why we didn't send it back at the time but, we didn't so thats that.

Anyway, everything seems okay with it to look at without tearing away at the glue filled bottom. Here's a pic...

Any tips on where to start?

No sound at all coming from the mic.

Cheers folks!

The wiring looks okay as far as I can tell from a blurry pic. There isn't much to go wrong in an SM57, so the chances are it's a duff joint or broken lead out wire on the capsule coil.

It might be worth contacting Shure UK and asking how much a repair is likely to cost. I expect it would be cheaper to buy a new one... but you never know.

Thanks again Hugh!

Yes it all looks fine from what I can see.

So do you not think its something I should tackle myself?

I'll, of course, ask Shure what they think too.

Cheers Hugh!

I came across a brand new 58 a few years back that must have been a fake ... bad transformer and chopped chinese newsprint (!) in the goo. And the capsule winding was broken.
