My 'best' mix to date...

Hello! I have just completed what I think to be my best mix to date. It was
mastered by Simon Humphreys at chair works which definitely improved it a hell of a lot!.
Anyway.... I'm still not completely happy with it. The band are though, and have said they
might come back soon so any advice on what could be improved next time would be great. Here it is (for a week only before they release the full EP).... http://soundcloud.com/emmottandthefolkestra/love-lust-and-desire

I don't know too much about engineering and production, but for what it's worth, sounds
right enough to me.
As soon as I got to the end, went back to the beginning
for another listen,
great - Dynamically, Instrumentally, Groovically,
Interestingly, Totally :-)
I am in a good because England are one up! tis a
good tune though

Yeah its largely pretty good.
If I have to find fault - France have made it
level - then the 'breakdown' does not work for me, the tune just seams to fade down for a
spell.

Overall it's a good mix, but I feel you could have been a bit braver in letting
instruments have their moment in the limelight. There are a few nice licks going on during
no-vocal sections and it would have been nice for those instruments to lift up for a
moment or two.
One all - not a bad start... grin:

3.15 - twang! I wasn't listening from a technical perspective, I liked it, only at 5.10,
for me, it's too long. I'm a believer in the 4 min kiss of death. Although it had a proper
ending, thumbs up for that, can't stand fade outs.

Yes on a
few listens it could do with trimming down to a shorter length a bit and the 'breakdown'
doesn't really add much to the whole.
Some might say if I am in a good mood
due to England's winning, then am not happy much of the time! A draw's not bad though
considering our new humble and lowly expectations

Thanks for the kind words! I did actually try to bring out some of the 'moments' but when
the band came in (a 7 piece) there was always at least one person unhappy that others were
being overshadowed... they all wanted to be very much on the same level as one another.
They have uploaded another track off the EP today if anyone is interested? It has a
different feel and it was my first attempt at recording strings, which was great fun! http://soundcloud.com/emmottandthefolkestra/sea-of-antiquityThanks

That's great stuff. I particularly like the epic percussion sounds going in in the back of
the mix. Makes the thing seem expansive and whole.

Touching, but misguided! This is where a strong 'producer' role is
important, but when the band are paying your wages it's a tough pair of boots to fill.
I love this latest song. It's reminiscent of the Strawbs when they were at their
best; 'The Hangman and the Papist' springs to mind - and also makes my Hammond fingers
begin to itch!!!
Great stuff - I'm a customer for this when it's properly
available!

These are seriously good from every point of view. Strong songs, dynamic
performance and clean mix. What a breath of fresh air compared with the usual fare.

Right on. One of my favorites also. Does
this explains your signature line? But it all went wrong with 'Long Haired Lover'.

My sig is a reference to a book that, when I first read it as a boy,
resonated with, made sense of and ultimately helped to change my life...

Oh yes. Kes. I didn't know the name of the original book. Still, it does sound a bit like
a line from Dave Cousins.
