Gateing Snare reverb
      #20859 - 24/09/04 07:05 AM
Yes, I'm trying to put a gate on the reverb coming from a snare, all within Logic, and am having problems getting the desired effect.

Ideally I want the snare's reverb to tail but then stop suddenly when the Kick drum hits, using a programmed breakbeat running at 135.

Any tips from all you Pro's?

I don't use Logic, so I can't help with the specifics. However, the principle is that you want a gate on the reverb returns which is triggered by the kick, with the gate in "reverse" mode so that it shuts rather than opens when the kick is, er, kicked.

You simply require a gate with an adjustable hold time.

Use the original snare sound as a key input to the gate but set the gate to mute the reverb return. The gate will open when the snare hits, and stay open for the duration of the hold time after the snare signal has fallen below the threshold. Adjust the hold time so that the reverb mutes fractionally before the bass drum hits.

The classic gated reverb effect also uses a compressor on the reverb return ahead of the gate to maintain the reverb tail level until the gate cuts off.

You may find that your reverb processor already has a gated reverb effect with an adjuatable hold time -- use that if you can because it will be far easier and less demanding of your CPU!

Yep, it's called EnVerb. Now I suppose someone's going to tell me that only Logic Pro has this processor.

Actually, I'll do it myself - it appears that you don't have this option if you're using Logic Express, in which case, I feel your pain and defer to other people's advice here.
