What's your favourite item / items of vintage gear, that you own ?

I think mine has to be my Roland drum machines...I don't own the "classic" machines
(808/909) though, I'm talking about the more cheesy home organ style beatboxes - TR77,
CR68, CR8000. Great big hulking beasts, that take up far too much studio space, but I
couldn't bear to get rid of 'em.
What's yours ?

On an episode of The Mighty Boosh they kept Gary Numan in a cupboard. That would be a
pretty cool item of "Vintage" gear.

I would add my

My favourite bit of gear at the moment is my V Synth XT, but as
it's not yet vintage, I can't include it.

Mine is my Fairlight Series III (rev 9.34). DAMN, hold on.. I just sold it a few months
ago. Missing it like CRAZY Ok then... if I no longer have the Fairlight, it's probably a toss up between one of
these 4: Roland MKS80 Korg Poly 61M Roland JX8P Roland MKS50 I didn't realise so many of you owned a Fairlight. Are any of you a member of CMI
Yahoo Groups? I quite miss the Greg Holmes forums. Cheers, Peter

I need to find someone near me who has a Fairlight so I can have a try. I drooled over
them in the eighties along with keyboards like the Synclavier because they were so
expensive and so out of reach to most people. Are they still jaw-dropping good even by
todays standards?

They have their 'sound' and character. I have never come across any piece of
gear that can truthfully replicate the Fairlight sound.

This stuff always gets stuck on keyboards. So I'll say my original 1960s LA4 compressor,
my 1970s handmade flamenco guitar (Vicente Sanchiz), my original '59 Gretsch Anniversary
and matching Gretsch valve combo amp, my three Neumann KM84 pencil mics and my three
original and restored U87s (not the inferior "Ai" newer models), and an assortment of tape
equipment from 2 to 24 tracks.
But the Hammond A100 is OK too, if we really
have to do keyboards!
These are all things that get regular use, not "glass
case" items. And they get used because they do the job.

My Roland HS-60.
I've used it on about 70% of the tracks I've released. It's
mainly just used for base drones... But I love it.

Same here, the sound is VERY special and truly unique. Sampling
the Fairlight sound and playing it back through Kontakt, for example, isn't the same
because of how the Fairlight pitches the sound... it's true, clock-driven sample-playback
speed change and not software re-sampling. Then there's the filters Bah, I'm
beating myself up talking about it!!!
With regards to the Synclavier, AFAIK the
phat, chunky beautiful sound of this came about because of an electronics design error.

Akai XR10 drum machine ART Multiverb LTX Zoom 1204 rack multifx Electro
Harmonix DRM16 drum machine
None of these probably count as classic or some not
even vintage, but I love them and can reach for them and get exactly what I want. My DAW
and 200 plugins can often have me running around in circles.
The 3 or 4
distortion programs on the Zoom are some of my favourite ever and I've never known anyone
else to even mention them.

Out of all the 'boards I'd definitely say the PolySix, ESQ-1, CAT and Mono/Poly are the
real favourites.
Maybe when I get my Polivoks back I'll remember if it kicked

I've now pretty much reached the point where I wouldn't part with anything in my studio,
but the favourites would be: MiniMoog Moog Taurus Hammond T202 Roland CE1 chorus MXR Phase 100 Closely followed by: Oberheim
Xpander Sequential Pro-One Roland JP-8080 Roland MKS-80 ..and I
miss my MKS-70, which is still very ill indeed. Maybe time to scour eBay again.

My Yamaha CS01, which I bought brand new in the 80s and have loved dearly ever since.
Recently brought out of semi-retirement to play bagpipe-like drones in my current band,
which is a kind of only-slightly-plugged-electro-folk-rock, er, thing. I get to wear it
like a keytar, too, 'cos of its strap buttons and placed-for-this-purpose bender and mod
wheels. Actually, this has just inspired another post...

Of the stuff I own, the Fender Chroma. It still sounds great and is still inspiring.
Like a couple of other people, I used to run a Yamaha CX5M, I had the composer
software with the music staves, the SFG05 synth board with editor and a floppy disc drive
- I got a lot of use out of it. I've thought about picking one up, but haven't because I
remember the sequencer having terrible laggy timing, and also because I have a Yamaha
FB01, which has the exact same tone generator in it that's in the CX5.

I love my Pro-one. Having said that I may have voted for my late lamented SH101 if I still
had it! Not as much power but arguably more fun ......Pro one makes some amazing sounds
though (or should that be noise!) Just got the Pro-One back this weekend after a bit
of TLC from James at Synth Repair Services. I know in this company I hardly need sing his
praises but for anybody looking for synth repairs etc, look no further!

didn't realize a K2000R would count as "vintage" already, but if it does, then I have
several items of similar age. Among which: -K2000RS (and now you know where my
username comes from :-) ) -Yamaha SY55 -Alesis Quadrasynth -Korg Poly 800
(with inverted keyboard) And of course, although not Vintage, but sounds like: my
MOTM modular synth.
