How does tape work? new
      #92324 - 23/02/05 04:29 AM
Although I'm very familiar with the ins and outs of how digital recording works, as is pretty much necessary for anyone working with the medium, I realised that I really don't have much idea how analogue, well tape, recording actually works. I have a reasonable understanding of analogue electronics, its just when it comes to tape I come up against a bit of a mind block as to how the information is actually stored and played back on the tape. At a guess, I've vaguely got to the point of some kind of easily magnetised material on the tape, tape heads are electro magnets, varying their strength with the incoming voltage, therefore magnetising/demagnetising the tape, and the playback heads are pretty much the same in reverse....am I pretty much thinking along the right lines here?
