Although I'm very familiar with the ins and outs of how digital recording works, as is
pretty much necessary for anyone working with the medium, I realised that I really don't
have much idea how analogue, well tape, recording actually works. I have a reasonable
understanding of analogue electronics, its just when it comes to tape I come up against a
bit of a mind block as to how the information is actually stored and played back on the
tape. At a guess, I've vaguely got to the point of some kind of easily magnetised
material on the tape, tape heads are electro magnets, varying their strength with the
incoming voltage, therefore magnetising/demagnetising the tape, and the playback heads are
pretty much the same in reverse....am I pretty much thinking along the right lines here?
