KRK v8 tweeter replacement new
      #948282 - 20/10/11 10:36 PM
Evening folks, a general repair question here.

By way of a roomate, I've come into possession (well, they're still his but I use them more) of a pair of KRK v8 active monitors. These things had been used and abused for a few years before i got my hands on them and i'm sad to say that one of the tweeters is gone and the other is about to go.

I recently did some checking online and it seems that KRK discontinued these awhile ago, and as such i might have trouble getting replacement drivers. It must be said this research was brief at best, but i thought i'd get more joy here anyways.

My question is this: Can i stick in any 1-inch dome tweeter that is rated at the same impedance as the ones that are gone and will fit in the housing, and if so, has anybody any suggestions as to which ones I might choose?

Yes you can, but if you follow up that question by asking 'will it sound like the originals' or 'will it sound better or worse than before' then there's no way of finding out other than doing it

For rough and ready playback it could be worth it, but if you want to use them as monitors with any claim to accuracy then you'll have to track down a pair of the original tweeter units or be knowledgeable enough to tweak the crossover network design to sound reasonable with a new model of tweeter.

It's probably worth contacting KRK to see if they still hold spare parts before you do anything else, since if they do that would be by far your simplest solution

I had intended to contact KRK, but I wasn't 100% certain of the legitimacy of my mate's ownership of the speakers (I have since been convinced), and that will be my next step.

I knew they wouldn't sound the same, but at the moment I can only afford either replacement tweeters or a sub-200 quid pair of speakers I reckoned that new tweeters in these would be the better option.

Cheers for the help good sir, much appreciated.

My pleasure - fitting identical replacements is the way to go if you can manage it
