Quartet - Anyone know of this program?
      #803577 - 14/01/10 02:24 PM
Back in 1990, at the grand old age of seven, I got bought an Atari STE 520. A few months later I got my first taste of music production when I was given a copy of a program called Quartet. You could control 4 samples at a time by placing them on a stave. I remember the sense of wonderment at learning that the lower down the stave you placed the sample the longer it would play for! Particularly great for this one drum loop, I seem to remember The kid who gave it to me (who was the son of my mum's friend and a lot older, maybe late teens?) used to sporadically come over to show me his new creations which always used new sets of samples, which I always asked for but never received Oh well...

Anyway, was wondering if anyone knew of Quartet and if there was an emulation I could use on my Windows PC? I've done a search on the net and apart from an unlinked mention on Wikipedia there doesn't seem to be much (apart from sc68.atari.org which as far as I can make out only hosts quartet files and not a program).

Thanks in advance for any advice!

I've not got much time to give you a full reply but suffice to say you need (Google is your friend here):

(1) STeem - Atari STE emulator
(2) TOS 1.62 or TOS 2.06 UK ROMs
(3) Floppy Image - for putting software onto a real Atari STE double density floppy disk, if you have a real ST/E that is.
(4) More info

Cheers! Looks a bit technical but I'll give it a try!

I received the Quartet User Manual through the post yesterday and today I spent over an hour scanning it. Anyone who would like this can download it from this link:

Good God!

I love this program, and was one of the reasons I had to buy a new Atari.

Thank you also for the Quartet manual!!! I got stuck this week in the loft as I had forgotten how to stop playback, and have to reset the machine!!

Luckily, it starts from ROM in about 3 seconds and the program itself is about 80kb so loads in about 10 seconds. Id like to see Windows do that! Ha ha. Bliss

I'm going to give Cubase a try and some other programmes like Maxymiser. I did use Breakthru2 quite a lot which was also excellent. There is something fun about this computer that I cant quite put my finger on. Its cool. Ive just hooked it up to a Akai s2800 harware sampler, and lets see what this 20 year old baby can do!!

If anyone has any problem downloading the Quartet user manual, let me know and I will provide another download link.

Oh and I scanned the entire manual for the Replay 16 last year too! This can be found at the atarimania website.
