What do you guys think of the Woodpecker? new
      #945152 - 05/10/11 01:04 AM
Blue Woodpecker that is!
What are your experiences (good and bad)?
Where do you find it works best for you?
Why isn't there any mentions or reviews for it here? Is it worth the price? Or are we expected to just pay for its looks?

I've owned one for a couple of years now. IMO I think it is great. Bear in mind my only other ribbon is a CAD Trion 7000, and that is a quite different animal.

The thing I love about the Woodpecker is that it provides the "ribbonish" warmth on the botton but with the clarity of a condenser on the top.

I've only dabbled with it on vocals but I don't think I would have a problem using as a vocal mic on the right voice. Think your Michael Buble's of this world. Where I absolutely love it is on clean guitar cabs. It is absolutely outstanding capturing all the nuances throughout the spectrum. Not quite as good on heavily overdriven guitar which I tend to use the standards, 57, 421 or 906, but I generally use either the CAD or Woodpecker as well.

Nice on acoustic guitar if it is a solo instrument. Perhaps a bit too much for a busy mix though. I've also used it on violin with great results. Pennywhistle, flute, actually the world's your oyster.

Bottom line...yep, I would heartily recommend it. As to value? Well it probably sits pretty well mid way in the area of ribbon mics as far as price and that's probably a fair place for it to sit as far as quality goes as well.

Cheers
Graham

Nice mic. Very nice mic in some circumstances.

It wasn't reviewed in SOS, but it did feature in the Ribbon Mic shootout a few years ago:

Yeah,
I like my "Woody" on different things i.e. some vocals, guitar cabs (mix with SM57 or Sennheiser 906) and acoustics.
However there are so many other ribbons that you may want take a look at this as well as SOS November '07 (as mentioned before).
Price wise? I got mine from the US as a part of the bundle purchase (two years back)so it was way cheaper than in the UK.

What does "it exhibited a little bit of a nasal pinch]/b] in the upper registers," and "this wouldn't be first choice if you were looking for out-and-out character." mean?

The electric guitar demo lacks any low-end while it can be heard on the acoustic (from different websites).
Thinking it'll be a nice combo alongside my SE4 Pairs. To cover both high-top clarity and the lower end.

Recordinghacks.com recently did a series of shootouts with an obscene number of ribbon mics, one of which being the Woodpecker. If you go to the website, the introduction to the shootout starts on July 11 and continues about half a dozen posts beyond that.

Well...

I put my finger in the Woodpecker's hole and the Woodpecker said 'god bless my soul!'

sorry, couldn't resist
