The original Decca Tree is an array of three Neumann M50s with the left and right mics spaced apart by 2 metres, and he centre mic forward of those by 1.5 metres. Although using omni capsules, the M50 is actually quite directional at HF, so the side mics need to be angled towards the edges of the orchestra or band, and the centre mic forward, and all tilted down.

Don't disregard the importance of the directionality -- using three SDC omnis really doesn't produce as effective a stereo sound stage (in my view, anyway). I've had good success with hypocardioid (sub-cardioid) mics and even with cardioids -- I often use KM184s, for example.

Also, don't take the dimensions as gospel. Those lengths work well for a big orchestra, but you might prefer a tighter array for a smaller ensemble. There's no absolute right or wrong; it's all about getting the best sound with an acceptable stereo image and mono compatibility.

Do you really care about people who are still listening to music in mono? I mean, stereo's been around for a while now... get with the times?

Do they have some sort of rudimentary built-in speaker? Also a headphone jack, surely?

Commenting on mono built in speaker. You can have headphones but 99% of the time I use it I don't want headphones on.

Yes.

So why isn't everyone listening to 5.1... or 10.2... or even 22.3? -- all three have bee around a decade or so now...

As those above have pointed out so well, mono is still a very common listening format.

I find a stereo mix that is mono compatible sounds better (when listening in stereo) to me than a stereo mix that is not very mono compatible.

Agreed. It's often harder to mix in mono. And referring back to ambient mic techniques like the Decca tree, if it's not mono compatible, it's quite likely that it will sound pants in stereo, anyway: too wide and 'phasey'.

Sure, neither do I in most of my work on any portable computer. No-one expects a box that size to be a serious music-playing device! But if I *do* want to use it as an audio player, I plug through to proper speakers or use cans.
