Wobble bass- How to set an automatic filter's vibration to a specific tempo
      #872879 - 05/11/10 01:40 AM

An automatic filter is one of the effects used for the "wobble" bass in dubstep music. GarageBand lets you change the speed of the vibration of an automatic filter, but the slider isn't precise enough to match the song's tempo.

Is there a plugin, preferably on Mac, that will let me do this? Better yet would be a effect pedal that I can plug my instruments directly into.

Thanks, everyone.

Do you have logic?

Logics ES2 plugin can do this easily, The thing you are looking for is to apply a tempo sync'd LFO or Low Frequency Oscillator to modulate (change) the filter cut off of the synths filter.

Logic is a little out of my budget, though I would be willing to invest in a pedal that can reproduce the effect live and in sync. When I look for filter pedals though, all I can find are envelope filters that just have an auto-wah effect and don't oscillate. What kind of pedal should I be looking for? Any suggestions?

You could do this in many free soft synths, for example LinPlug's FreeAlpha.

It has got LFOs which can sync to tempo (e.g. one cycle in 1/4 notes) and a mod matrix so you can modulate the filter cut off by an LFO. There is even a manual for it linked on the same page.

Plugins - you've got Camel Audio Camelphat and Camelspace. There's also a free AU filter plugin that can tempo sync... run a search on KVR.

The only suitable pedal I can think of is the Moog Midi MurF which accepts midi clock. Quite expensive though!

The simplest way is to use MIDI controller data to directly affect the filter cut off. Make a sequence with the data following the "LFO shape" you want. That way it will always be in tempo with your track. No plug-ins required.

NI Massive is so good at this that Youtube has a range of tutorials on wobble bass. Automation is very neat in massive.
