The Wire - BBC Radio 4

Did anyone else hear this on Sunday 2nd? Something for all of you sound
designers to check out. Unfortunately, it's not available on listen again, but here's the
link to the program page. The Wire From that page there is a link to the project's
web site. From the trails I was expecting something about Aolian harps, but
this is something very different. Andy

What a great programme! Please radio four, give me more of this! I too thought of Aeolian
harps, but I was also reminded of some people I've seen who use large gongs as a kind of
therapy - it is an odd experience. I didn't think much of the voice interaction though -
not my kind of thing. Other provoked thoughts included the fact that you really do need
time to listen to these sort of things (that are all around us) and how we have filled our
daily lives with things that make horrible noises and drown out these little quiet moments
of beauty. Essential listening for all lower case people.

I was laid out on the sofa, a bit flu'd up, when that came on. Perfect, and no nausea
either (unlike the poor meditation folk exposed to some of it ...)

Reminds me of Ellen Fullman's Long String Instrument. Will have to give it the full

That was great. It reminded me of being a kid and hearing certain sounds, usually rhythmic
which, if only there were some was to capture it and play it back in some kind of
controlled way could be used as a basis for music. Wonder if anyone ever tried it?
The beauty of the programme for me was the mixing of the industrial nature of the
"instrument" and the organic nature of the sound and that it was a wildlife recordist's
ear that first caught it.
BTW, rope on a flagpole, wind in trees, train (of
course), radiator. I must have driven my family nuts.
At least I got it out
of my system before the tech came about to do any damage with it.

train (of

When I get a quiet
local train service there's often a short wait outside the station when the train cools
down and the metalwork pings and echoes. I mentioned this to a blind acquaintance who's
into this kind of thing and he made me a 15-minute recording. I'm still trying to figure
out how to use it, but it's certainly interesting.

I have a 1yr old in the house who at the minute is bouncing a plastic duck off the
radiator and laughing her head off. Her older brother (2) loves to shout in tunnels and
echoey walkways.
Sweeping generalisation alert:
Is this the root of
our love/need for music? An animal need to explore our surroundings and monitor/interpret
the acoustic cues extended to the point of exploration for it's own sake?

Thank you Zen for pointing this out, it really is sublime.
That metallic
whipping sound reminded me of rails as a train approaches too. I spent a lot of time next
to country railway crossings as a child, waiting for a train to come along just so I could
hear that wondrous noise.
It is also very reminiscent of the effects the
Radiophonic Workshop used for atmospheric soundtracks and the laser shots that Ben Burtt
created for the Star Wars movies by hitting strung wire with a wrench.

Fantastic stuff; thanks for the links. It was great that they got Chris Watson and Alan
Lamb (a true pioneer) to do this. Shame about the dodgy 'healing' stuff near the end.

Another interesting radio piece this week is 'music made 'with ice from a frozen lake' http://news.bbc.co.uk/today/hi/today/newsid_9347000/9347755.stmI wish they would make a full length programme about this, too.

Check out his website. Terje It does raise the question of how you stop
your lips from sticking to the Ice Trumpet.

If you're interested in the sound design
possibilities of ice, you must have a listen to this one from Andreas Bick:

Well, that's pretty much what the BBC have
now done: 'Ice Music of Norway' http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00y8v0w
Presumably someone
has sampled it (perhaps one of the sound engineers interviewed) for posterity or inclusion
in a sample library, as it seems to be the ultimate analogue instrument, with no permanent
means of saving the 'patch' (let alone the instrument itself!)

Well, this wasn't The Wire I was expecting Sounds like an intriguing program. Whoever would have thought of capturing sounds
through fencing wire :S Well, clearly this guy, but you see my point... Maybe
they'll make another one called The Sopranos... not another series of the hit TV show but
instead a documentary all about the life of soprano singers
