The micro Korg is a good call for starters. You can get some great sounds out of it and don't be put off by the dinky keys..MIDI is your friend here! Another route you could take would something like an EMU Orbit or Planet Phatt.

The Orbits can usually be had fairly cheaply but the 'Phatt is a rarer beast. They are 1u rack-mount with 16 part multitimbrality and as they are ROM based they are stuffed full of editable sounds. If you fancy something newer how about the Korg Micro X?

I've got one and again its stuffed full of quality Korg sounds old and new.(for your sort of style the M1 Organ springs to mind. THE house/garage organ bass sound. I recommend reading a review to see how much it does. They are within budget but only just. You will get more bang for your buck with the Micro X compared to the MicroKorg but you pay more. It might be an idea to hang back on the MicroKorg. They are ten a penny and will surely come down in price even further.

Well the last one on ebay sold for £85 which is cheaper than I thought. At that price I'll be getting one myself! There is one in USA selling for £59 buy it now but the shipping is £66 plus the import tax it 'll attract.

They have been around a good few years now so don't expect the sounds to be as up to date as the Micro X or an Electribe for instance. This doesn't mean they aren't useable but you will have heard them before! I haven't had the 'Phatt in my hands but thats the case for my Orbit so I'm guessing they will be the same.

A nice touch is the three pairs of outputs. You can plug another two stereo inputs part way into the two 'sub' outputs of the Emu and it becomes a sort of 'summing box' or mixer without faders. Great in a rack where you are tight on desk 'in's' or where you don't have a mixer at all. Just use the volume controls of the other gear and away you go! Upto 2 modules/synth's into the EMU, stereo pair out to monitors/DAW/tape machine etc. The manual describes it better than I can! Of course you can always use the separate outputs as just that allowing you to track 3 different groups of patches individually.

yea i mean all my music making experience has been within logic...
and i have got some nice sounds out of some plugins but its that real sound im looking for,i guess the other way to get that is to run the plug ins threw a decent analogue mixer and re-record....but then im limited to what i can do.

Yeah I know what you mean. I prefer hardware gear to soft synths myself. You can always record your hardware gear into your computer anyway.

Have fun!

Don't worry about the sounds being dated. Mos of the sounds in the Microkorg are somewhat retro so they have been used in tracks for decades now. It's a great keyboard.
