Anyone who had a heart ... keyboard sound? new
      #906422 - 06/04/11 07:04 PM
Does anyone here know what electronic instrument was used in the recording of Cilla Black's 'Anyone who had a heart'? It's noticeable at the beginning of each chorus, as the backing vocals kick in, with a rather mechanical glissando up the best part of an octave. It then shadows CB's voice throughout the chorus.

Bearing in mind that the record was made in 1964, I appreciate it could have been a Clavioline or a Novachord, but it is a very 'vocal' sound - a bit like the 'Female Voice' Chamberlin tape, but did they have a Chamberlin at Abbey Road in 1964? ... and was it capable of such a wide gliss?

My reason for asking? - just trying to make sense of another bit of history. Of course, if this has been answered before please point me to the existing thread.

Chris

I don't know Cilla's version, but could it be an organ?

Having listened to it today, only via Youtube, but to me all I here is a backing vocal in the chorus that follows the lead melody, in the right speaker. It sounds like a group of ladies who also add a little in the bassoon solo. At the end they actually single the lyrics in the chorus; the "take me in your arms" part. The reverb adds a unusual harmony to the backing vocals as well.

Wot e sed ^^

Some BVs asked to perform in a very stylised, slightly shrieky manner.

Definitely not Novachord

Thanks to all who have responded to my question. Now, it seems, I can listen to the right channel in the choruses and hear either a machine or a particularly talented female singer (one Ms Chamberlin no doubt!), sometimes both. I think it's the consistency of the initial glissando and the frequency/depth of the vibrato that keep me thinking a machine is involved ... but I concede it could be human skill (and a hint of Clavioline).

Ermmm...

Back then, session musos, BVs, etc., went into the studio and pretty much did things to order straight off after a run through or two and didn't have much in the way of studio trickery. In and out with no arsing about.

It's quite feasible that a group of BVs known on the top London session circuit could easily reproduce a performance consistently - in fact, I'd be surprised if they couldn't!
