Logic and Mac FAQ threads......
#49416 - 13/11/04 11:53 PM

Hi Peeps. In response to frequent requests and suggestions, I'm aiming to set up a
Logic FAQ, and a Mac FAQ as sticky threads at the top of this forum... and eventually
maybe turn them into a dedicated area as per the PC.
Sadly, I don't really
document all the questions I answer here and elsewhere, or for clients, so I'm having
trouble deciding what qualifies as an FAQ question....
SO..
Requests and suggestions please !
I'll sort through them, and compile a list
for Logic, and a list for Mac OS X, and maybe one for OS9 and before (If my failing memory
can remember all the answers for that lot..... )
Then Between the resident mac
heads and logic guru's , We'll compile a list of answers and stick the lot up for people
to peruse in times of grief.
I know what number one in the logic FAQ is going
to be though.
Logic FAQ answer 1) NEVER EVER have the XSkey inserted during the
install process. in @50% of cases the key is buggered as a result. and nothing on earth
will retrieve it.
So roll up roll up, get yer pet queries in here.
This thread will be stickied up so you all have the chance to contribute.... without it
falling off the page....
This FAQ won't happen overnight though...... I DO have
a life outside this forum!

Q1) Can I use my Logic 5 PC files on a Mac? 2) Can I convert my Cubase PC files
to Logic on Mac? 3) Do I have to buy a new copy of Logic, or will the PC
version I've got work? Can I crossgrade still? 4) I've heard Macs use
AIFF files. Will it recognise my wav Files? 5) The Aplle monitors are out of my
price range, Can I use a normal PC Screen? OK, they might seem obvious but its
a start.

What exactly is Plugin Delay Compensation and why has it been taken away from busses in
Logic 7?
It has been said that Logic sounds different from other DAWs, I
thought in the digital domain this is irrelavent as everything is made up from 0s and 1s.
Is there a difference compaired with others? If so, how/why?
Are there any
differences (other than the obvious) in offline and online bouncing? Can offline bouncing
harm the quality in anyway?

How do I rewire Logic to Reason? What's the best way of programming drums in

Just wondered if there's a way to get my right mouse button to behave like alt + click,
thus copying a part when I grab it? I have a logitech cordless jobbie and it just struck
me how handy that would be. Also, what are the key commands right at the bottom
of the list for, for the controller assignment window ( which I can't find) - is that like
a MIDI learn function for my midi controller and plug-ins, or is it something to do with a
Logic control unit?

I would love Logic to have some colour content in the Transport window when it is not in
use. Just a simple GREEN circle around the Play button, and a RED one around record would
save me a few mistakes made while stretching across to hit STOP and hitting record by
mistake while playing, or singing live. Must get these spectacles checked as well !!!

that belongs on a wish list NOT an FAQ Roastbeef.....
711 , Not sure about
logitech, but kensington's Mouseworks utility allows you to define keystroke functions for
ALL the buttons on their mice.... this would allow exactly what you're asking for... it
MIGHT work on your mouse as well as the Kensington ones... But surely logitech do
something similar??

yeah, sorted thanks Max. My Logitech mouse now opens the mouseware app when I
click the scroll wheel, and there I can change right click to be alt + click for working
with Logic and back to ctrl + click for Safari - tabbed browsing. This is great
for when working on the arrangement of a tune.

Once I have created an apple loop, how do i make it appear in the loop browser? Why can't
I edit an apple loop in the sample editor? How do I turn an apple loop back into a non
apple loop? When creating an apple loop, is there a way of making the apple loop a copy
of the original instead of over-writing it? How do I name an apple loop? PS..the manual is
rather poor when it comes to a full explanation of the apple loops function, Thanks

How to optimise audio files (ie. get rid of unused bits of file to save HD space) in LE6?
Had this facility in Logic3.5 - where'd it go? (I suspect the answer is Logic Pro)

Hey, SOS: why not a short article on setting up a Powerbook for audio use? A few articles
have referred to it (e.g. comparing instances of Platinumverb that can be run vs using a
dual G), but I don't recall specifics.... @@@@ In the meantime, here
is essential reading for setting up audio on OS X: http://emusician.com/mag/emusic_tracking_big_cats/Same
author contributed to the following thread over at OSXAudio.com: http://www.osxaudio.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=12004These
should definitely get you headed in the right direction.... @@@@ BTW, the node thingie only works with G4's and G5's.... Chris

Are all the types of Logic audio similar as to how many physical inputs and monitor
outputs they can handle in a session? I am interested as i need a program to record
into with a motu 828 and be able to monitor all 8 channels. Is Express the same as
Pro for this? There used to be an educational version avaliable for £80, has anyone had
experience with this? I only need the program to record into, not mix in so it seems
silly for me to pay out alot for the full version if the lower versions will do the job i
need them for. Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated,
Cheers,
Kieran.

Any chance we can seperate the FAQ suggestions from the wishes and questions here? This
thread is looking quite full, but it seems mostly to be questions that don't really fit as
FAQ.
Perhaps there could be a screen by screen FAQ in the same way as Logic's
key commands menu is laid out. There could be sections for PC-Mac switchers, initial
set-up questions and even a section with Logic Instruments divided out into specific
instruments.

You need a fast Ethernet connection to
make this Logic Pro 7 feature work. Gigabit (ie. 1000-base T at least; 10 or 100-base T is
too slow).

Hi Ian,
Yes, I read the
article. Putting the long history lesson aside, there's only about (2) paragraphs at the
end of the article that offer specifics (advice like "turn off AppleTalk": well, there's a
bit more to it than THAT).
So rather than a walk down Mac PowerBook lane, I was
suggesting a more practical and comprehensive article, with step-by-step instructions for
optimizing a current G4 PowerBook running OS X for music apps... I see Martin Walker
offering similar concrete advice for PC laptops.
However, it's kind of a
non-issue for me, now: I found disparate sources of information on the Web with much
information not mentioned in the article.

actually it will work on any Mac
machine with a fast ethernet, or gigabit ethernet connection BUT
your G3 iMac
has about as much additional CPU grunt as the average Chocolate fireguard.
it'd
probably struggle simply to run the Node App, never mind any worthwhile numbers of plug
ins. Especially as there's no Velocity engine facilities on the g3 series/.
(I am writing this on a G3/450DVSE iMac BTW, so I'm not simply being snobbishly picky.)

Hi Max, (long time no speak etc.)
Remembering when I switched to mac / logic,
the first thing that would have helped tremendously would have been a simple tutorial on
setting up enviroments, infact I may have a crack at writing one over the week end (if it
may be of any use)

I have a question: You have an audio track. You want to replace a few sections
with one good section. You copy/paste this good section into the gaps where the
dodgy bits were. Fine, so far . . . Move the parts to the right place . . . So far, so
good. Now, the frustrating part is that when using the finger to pull the beginning ore
end of one part, all the copied parts move as well!. I'm guessing it's
because it is only one file on disk. All I can think of is to 'convert regions to
audiofiles' which is a bit clunky. Please tell me I'm a fecin' eejit and there
is an obvious thing I've missed! G

Guy.
there are 3 "stages" if you like.
1) the original Region, all
copies of it are literally simply the same thing played again, thus ANY changes to the
original are also changes to the later renditions.
2) Convert to individual
regions. at this point your finger problem is resolved. as each region is in fact a
separate entity that happens to address the same audio file... however any edits of the
audio file samples themselves will be reflected on all regions addressing that file.
3) Convert to individual audio files. at this point you can then directlky edit
the samples without affecting other regions, as they are now all their own files.

Hi,
This is my first post so I hope someone can help.
I own
Fxpansion's BFD Drum Module, it runs as a multi-out plugin in Logic.
My problem
is that Logic only allows 16 outputs from a plugin, where BFD needs 17.
Currently BFD displaces the crash cym 2 and ride cymbal on the same output channel, but
this means that you are not able to mix and add effects to them separately, because
they're on the same channel.
Will Apple ever fix this issue?
There
are many complaints about this from other BFD users on the KVR-vst.com forums for
Fxpansion.
Please can someone help
Thanks

I am new mac user and a new Logic 7 user as well. I am also having trouble with the
communication between logic and reason. I was able to rewire reason with logic and get the
audio of reason to play with my audio files in logic. But, for the life of me, I cannot
figure out how to record the audio from reason into Logic. Someone, please help me.

Ooops, just pressed the wrong button and gave this thread a rating of one, it needs much
more. Any way the question I was trying to put is:
Im a new mac user, In OS X
is there a setting or preference you can make so that everytime you double click on a disk
or folder it opens up in columns (or whaterver view is your preference) Also I second any
questions about apple loops in Logic 7

yes.
your finder preferences...
in desktop finder, select the
preferences menu from the Finder menu (Finder>preferences)
Under the
general tab, you can set what a new finder window command actually opens at (computer,
documents, home, or any mounted drive etc)
and whether to always open folders
in a new window, and/or open in column view , as well as the time delay in spring loaded
opening.
Labels Tab allows you to choose label colours and names,
The sidebar tab allows you to define what is displayed in the left hand
side bar of a finder window... which drives and special folders etc...
Advanced tab defines extension display , and search languages, and whether there are
warnings before you empty the trash.

Hey, am hoping its okay to to post this question here?...
I cant for the life
of me work out how to use whatever Logic's equivalent of Pro Tools' "playlists" function
is (where multiple takes can be stored on the same track in the arrange window) i have
scanned the manual, the pdf help & even the Apple Logic Pro training book. There must be
a way, yeh?
Even with replace mode enabled i couldnt work out how to record
over previous "takes" without either the previous take being audible on playback OR having
to manually delete them completely!
Any advice would be gratefully
appreciated
Thanks

Hi Max, Don't know if you've got anywhere with your FAQ s ite but I need
some help. I'm still trying to get the following setup working: Motu 896 (the
old one) + latest MOTU drivers Logic express Max OSX (panther) G4
Powerbook I've set the preferences up so that Logic talks to MOTU but made no
progress in actually recording. I plug my guitar into the Motu and firewire the motu into
the Mac but it won't record anything I play. However I can play back itunes through the
motu and if I change the settings I can record on logic through the powerbook's
microphone... Any suggestions or do you know of a beginner's guide to setting
up? Cheers Timbo

Seratonin. logic does not work in the same way as protools. It can
sort of be worked around though..... but not quite in the way you describe. Colnel sanders. What kind of guitar?? As I recall, the 896 Mk1 does
not have appropriate inputs for electric guitars (which have an output level not all that
dissimilar to Microphones) so both the impedance , and nominal levels are way off the
mark, and you would have such a low signal level you may not see it... never mind hear
it... using an appropriate DI box (with high impedance input) and running this into an
input switched to Mic rather than line should rectify this if that is the problem. failing that, you also need to check and see which inputs are numbered what on the 896
Firewire drivers, in case you have the ADAT port inputs swapped with the Analogue
inputs. I'll try and get full replies out tomorrow, as today is the Wife's
birthday, and I'm not supposed to be here Max

This probably has been discussed before often, but searching the forum didn’t help me so
your help is appreciated.
Although OS X has been my main platform for
everything non music related my music was always made on an OS 9 machine. I’m going X
and will be upgrading some main software and plugs (for instance Logic 6 plat to 7 pro and
Kontakt 1.x.to 2).
I would like to know if it’s possible to open saved (OS
9) vst plug in-settings (presets) in the OS X/ Audio Unit version of the ‘same’ plug.
Also: when I’ve made an arrangement in OS 9 (logic plat 6) and will open it
in Pro 7 in X, assuming I have all the X audio unit versions of the vst plugs I used in
the OS 9 environment, will my song play back as before (are the settings stored and opened
correctly)?
Is there any other upgrading issue I should be aware of (apart from
removing the XS key upon installation of Logic :-) )?
Thanks!
Merlin.

Copy your entire OS9 Logic folder to the new machine, this will include all the fx
settings and so on, as well as your songs (assuming you have them in there)
obviously you also need all the audio files and samples as well.
this ensures
you have at least got the data to work with...
Logic's own plug ins are
generally not a problem, but there are more hiccups with other plug ins... as long as you
have the OS 9 Settings files, it's usually possible to grab them...
the other
thing to remember is that Everything you have will need to be converted from ASIO or
Direct IO to Core audio., or , if I recall correctly, in your case, form 1 PT rig and TDM
implementation to a new one...
this is a bit of a faff, but more often than
not , fairly straight forward.
I do have to say though., that logic's "update
environment" option rarely works quite as you'd expect... it's one of the most
infuriatingly inconsistent buggers out there...
It depends how much
material you're going to want to bring over to the new system, But i'm afraid I'd expect
to have to spend a day or maybe a few, if there's lots, going through the material and
ensuring it all works right.... best to do that than find out in front of a client that
something didn't work.... \ there's also a gizmo called "logic preset
converter.app " that is intended to assist in converting os9 settings into OS X
formats.... sometimes it's necessary, sometimes not.... I don't think it exists in
logic 7, but I have it for Logic 6, if you can;t find it and may need it, give me a
shout...
Hope this not entirely cheerful reply is of use.

It definitely is of use and appreciated!
(Off Topic:)
And you've remembered correctly about PT. But since recently ...no more PT for me. I
noticed it just stood there and I was doing more and more native so I made the decision to
sell PT and invest in new/more native power. I don't work for clients (well at least not
in a way they come with PT sessions), so I'm really happy I've made a decision based on my
workflow instead of on what had become more or less a status symbol in my computer. :-)

i've got a couple of answers for you:

5 - i have a pc monitor, which i
connect to my 7600 via an adaptor which you should be able to get form any store which
knows their stuff. i think the new macs all use pc type monitor connections anyway so you
should be ok but again ask a dealer first...
hope that helps.

Waves 5 initializing as AU in Logic Pro 6 - help

Hi, I'm using the Waves 5 plugins in Logic Pro6 on my OSX 10.3.8 Mac When I start up Logic, the plugins take over 10 minutes to initialize, and then Logic to
open I know it's the Waves plugins which are taking so long because I removed
them from the components folder, ran Logic, and it took a minute if that to open I'm running the latest 5.0 version of Waves diamond bundle. I have contacted Waves
support, but haven't had any reply, so I thought I'd post here as you guys/gals know a lot
about Logic and thought it may be a Logic issue also Please can you help me Cheers Ashley

It kind of is a logic issue. Generally logic takes a long time to do anything! In 6, the
AU manager was not yet introduced, and every time you run logic it scans and initalises
all your components. The more you have, the longer it takes. Logic 7 helped this with
it's cache-ing system where essentially, it does the load once (the first time you run
logic with new plugins installed), then remembers it so that the next time you load logic,
all it does is (to the effect of:) "oh yeah, I remember these plug-ins, let them in!"
Solution: upgrade to logic 7.1. But bare in mind the downsides to doing this.
On another note: Max, is the compiled FAQ finished yet?

Max, I am happy to say that I have finally managed to afford the change to the darkside,
and bought my first Mac. I have little previous Mac knowledge, and am the perfect
candidate for a FAQ.
I am pretty good on Windows OS, and the same goes for
Logic 5, so I'm hoping I should grasp the changes.........at some stage.
For my
money some good questions to answer in a FAQ revolve around optimizing OSX for audio, how
to decrease resource hogging non-audio parts of the OS, should I uninstall garageband
before installing Logic Pro?. (Nice one for the toasty XS key advice).
Part of
using a PC for audio effectively means stripping out everything possible which is not
audio-related to increase performance. Maybe this is not as necessary in Macland?
Lastly, I got a 2Gig Macbook with 1 gig RAM, has anyone any performance info for this
spec set-up?
Hope you don;t think this is lot of waffle as I'm starting to
wonder myself!!!
Thanks guys

Here's another question for the FAQ.
How can I convert my collection of Acid
loops to work in Logic?

Surely the first FAQ will be: I want to buy a Mac - what are the best options for A
type User, B Type User and C type user
(BTW - that is my question)

Hey, how goes? Just converted to Mac + Logic, so apologies if this all seems a bit
obvious! But my band recorded a demo recently, I asked for the data files so I could have
do some mixing, editting etc. They're .omf, which Logic "knows" but won't open because
they're song files - any ways of getting around this so I can do some mixing? They won't
convert when I drag them into the arrange window, nor will they open when I open them from
inside Logic. Can't get back home to the manuals for a good while - so any help much
appreciated! Cheers!

Good day!
I've got one for you. I'm just starting out on a mac and DAW's in
general and read in my M-Box/Pro-tools instructions that I : - 'Shouldn't save music files
on system archives and a new archive should be created for music', so being a total
unabashed noob a couple of questions popped into my confused little head .
1)
Does this mean I should partition my drive and is 'partitioning' the same as creating a
new archive? I have been a PC user for a little while so partitioning is sort of familiar
to me. 2) What should I keep in the audio section of my hard drive? Just music files
or Sequencers, sample libraries, plug-ins and all the other crap too?
I intend
to mainly use my mac for music but I want to get into Carbon and C-sound as well. So I
guess on the audio side, 200 gigs should cover it.
Thanks for your time!

hey, just converted to mac and im having a few n00b troubles
1) How do i
install and use other AU/Vst plugins in logic express. I installed the programs as per
normal and i have .component files and a few .vst for the vsts, but i cant get them to
appear in logic. The main program im trying to get working is EZ drummer DKH.
2) Similarly, i have extra inserts and fx plugins, again, in the right folders and
installed but not appearing

VSTs don't work in Logic. Logic is an AU host only.
Audio Units (.component)
need to be installed in Library/Audio/Plug-ins
If plug-ins aren't appearing you
can get Logic to rescan through the preferences menu. Logic should scan new plug-ins at
every startup. If it's not finding them you may need to reinstall some of the Logic
librarys.

Thank you
You can get vst to au converters like this:
http://www.fxpansion.com/index.php?page=5&tab=22
But
they only work if you have, in the case of a mactel, a UB version of your VST - in which
case there's very probably a straight AU version of it anyway.
There is no way of
converting a Windows vst to an au.

helloooo hey has been a whiley since i last was in, but i have discovered
something a bit weird going on in logic 8 and am not sure what to do about it, but its
doing my head in a bit now :-Z goes something like this; I have
created a couple of instruments for a track using the ESX24 sampler and when i open logic,
the instrument looses the link to the audio files being used, even though I previously
saved the instrument with settings. My audio files are located in the "audio" folder under
the same host folder as my project, so Im presuming they should be found automatically.
The only way Ive found so far to resolve it, is to open the esx and re-load
the instrument settings that I saved, and then re-point each part of the instrument to the
corresponding audio files. Does anyone know how I could resolve the problem or
is this a possible bug? ta in advance Ju 02/04 Radio

they're in the wrong place..... the audio folder is intended for the audio tracks
recorded..... the EXS24 instrument referencing the audio samples , and ideally the audio
sample files themselves, , or a shortcut to them, should be should be in the ESX
instruments sample library folder
mac HD>Library>Application
Support>Logic>Sampler instruments.
is probably best....

hiya max
just to let you know I re-saved my project with the esx files in the
sampler instrument folder as you advised and its working fine now. thanks!
Ive managed to unearth another problem now though hehe...
ive hooked
up my juno 106 to the mac (1/4 jack from the "phones" port to line-in), then mac mic out
to amp. Am trying to nail a decent bassline out of the juno, thought I could fire up logic
and play my audio Ive already got recorded, then record the audio from the keyboard at the
same time, only snag is when i play a section on the juno, i hear two instances of it :-S
i dont think its latency as it would only play once...??
if anyone has any
ideas, they'd be very gratefully recieved

Hey. I searched the forum and wasn't able to find help with my problem.
Picture the scene. I have Logic 8. In a session I have an acoustic guitar. 3 tracks. 2
close mic's and a room mic. all 3 are at different levels ( as you might expect ). All 3
tracks are in a group. Now as the song gets going, the acoustic needs to come down a bit,
so, I draw some automation on one of the tracks, expecting the others to follow up and
down by the same amount, as they are grouped, but what happens is, they all jump to the
same level as the automated track. this happens as soon as I draw in the automation. Surly
I don't have to un-group the tracks and write each automation separately? ( he asks
hopefully!!! )
many thanks if you could help.

Yeah, grouping doesn't work like this. When three channels are grouped, you can write
automation to all three tracks by using one fader. But each of the track tracks have
independent automation - ie editing the automation in one track doesn't affect the
automation in the other tracks (though automation updates with the fader will drag the
others as well, and write their automation, providing they are in one of the automation
write modes.)
The best way to achieve what you want is to send the three
guitar channels to an aux, and then to the main outputs, and automate that aux for level
changes. This also lets you put plugins on the bus to affect all the tracks that make up
the guitar part if desired.

Desmond. Many thanks for the reply. I won't waste any more time trying that then.. haha..
ok, here's another one.
I've just read in the Logic 8 manual that you can
apply digidesign audiosuite plugins destructively in soundtrack pro2. The audio opens in
Soundtrack fine, and the regular plugins are all listed, but i can't find the audiosuite
plugins anywhere!! I looked on the apple discussion board but couldn't find a definitive
answer. ( even tho quite a few people seem to be asking the same question )
Thanks again

Where in the manual?
There is no
mention of the word "Audiosuite" in the Soundtrack manuals, so it seems unlikely.
The only references to Audiosuite plugins in the Logic manual say that you can process
audio using audiosuite plugins in the sample editor. This refers to Logic's inbuilt sample
editor, *not* Soundtrack Pro, which is a completely separate application.
So it
seems unlikely STP supports audiosuite plugins at all.

sorry for confusion.
The reference to Audiosuite is in the Logic manual, not
the STP manual. I tried the STP approach after seeing someone else on this message board
say it was possible. I did originally start with Logic sample editor, but couldn't work
out how to apply audiosuite, hence I started looking for other options.
How
would you go about applying audiosuite in Logic sample editor? as the only mention on page
518 LP8 manual doesn't really help and i've never used audiosuite outside Pro Tools
before..
Many thanks again for your time.

Using AudioSuite Plug-ins
The Sample Editor allows the use of AudioSuite
plug-ins. These plug-ins work destructively—the result of the editing process is written
into the audio file.
Note: AudioSuite plug-ins can only be used with hardware
addressed by the DAE (Digidesign Audio Engine). Any properly installed AudioSuite plug-in
will be displayed in the AudioSuite menu.
Are you running Logic under
DAE with Digi hardware, or are you running under Core Audio? You need to be running under
DAE before any available audiosuite plugins show up.

Pro Tools M-Powered is not Pro
Tools, it's a cut down native only version that works with regular audio interfaces. The
full ProTools, powered by hardware, works under DAE. This is the mixing engine underneath
Pro Tools.
You cannot use AudioSuite plugins in Logic with your version of
ProTools M-Powered, as far as I'm aware (I'm not a PT user).

Yes.
Page 196 in the main Logic manual, under the heading "Creating Your Own
Icons" documents the procedure.

Forever? It didn't occur to you to open
the PDF manual, type "icon" in the search field, and click on the first result? Took me
all of 12 seconds... considerably less than "forever"...

I think it's great that this FAQ has been place here, but I have a 'biased' suggestion.
I'm still not that OK with Logic, so along with the FAQ (Frequently Asked
Questions), can I suggest a different FAQ? (Frequently Answered Questions) Not trying to be awkward, but this set of good questions doesn't have any answers.
If I'm wrong, (and I am quite often) please point me to the aswers section..... T

Not a question, more general advise ... I've downloaded "QuicKeys" for mac, which
automates universal keyboard commands on OSX, so every five minutes I've programmed it to
autosave for logic to save me the hassle. There's probably an easier way to do
this?

I would never
ever do this, nor recommend anyone else do this.
I want to save when I want to
save. I do not want the computer randomly overwriting my project in the middle of me doing
stuff - that's crazy - and a surefire way to losing something important.
There
is no substitute for a good command-S habit.
Except now Apple think it's users
aren't even able to do that, and just take the function away.
Progress, I
guess. Two steps forward, one step backward...
However I do use Quickeys for
some other things, as well as Applescripts and other cool little tools...
