Just got back into music, (want to buy some old gear)

Hello, wasn't sure where to post this question so here it is.
I'm thinking of
buying a couple rack synths I'm after a Roland MKS-50 and Protues World (I know how to
program then) that's the main reason I want them, there also rack mounted so will save me
some space.
Can anyone give me an idea regarding cost, the only MKS-50 are from
the US and seem pricey any idea's where I should look and what a realistic price would be
in the UK.
The Emu's are a little easier to find so not much of a problem
there.
Hope someone can help out.

Hey man, welcome to the forum!
Oh, are you in for a shock. I got out of
music in 1998 and came back around 2005 and the whole world had changed. Now complete
tunes are wrote on a dull as dish water laptop. I still can't get my head around why
anyone would want to use such a device for music but that's how it's done these days.
Not to worry. There are still a few of us who have nothing to do with them and do
things the propper way. I personally would gladly burn every music laptop on earth.
Your alpha rack will be around £250. But that's without the pg300 controller
what would be around £300. So about £550 in all.
Not sure about protius
world but the 2000 model changes hands for around a ton
Hope this helps.

Thought about learning to program something else...? At those prices I can think of a lot
of stuff I'd rather have than an MKS50. Or how about going the VST route?

I do agree the alpha Juno is way over priced.
What's your budget mate. I
can't help you with. Vst's but others can. But I'm pritty clued up on hardware n prices n
stuff.
If you want a hardware rack the Roland jv1080 is awsome n £150. Covers
all Angles and would act as a work horse at least until you added other pieces if you felt
the need.
What type of music you planning on making fella?

Emu produced a Proteus VSTi which includes the Proteus 1, 2, World, and MoPhatt sample
sets and sound banks. It was also bundled free with some Emu keyboards in the past. It's
not the most efficient VSTi in terms of CPU demands, so I am limited in polyphony on my
ancient machine, but on a modern i5/i7 CPU you will have plenty of voices to play with.
Cheaper than a second hand Proteus module, includes ALL the Proteus factory sounds from
all modules, and you have a graphical editor that will allow you to use your experience of
the module to get up and running quickly and then start to get familiar with VSTi's. Then
you have access to loads of great free soft synths too. I believe Emu have
discontinued the software, but you may be able to get a copy on Ebay or even pick up a
second hand Emu controller keyboard with the bundled version for much less than the
hardware Proteus. So, you have options. Andy

I picked up a Proteus World and Proteus Orchestral for £50 each at cash convertors. Its
a buyer's market.

Something like the Korg TR-Rack might also be worth a look; eg there's one in Reader's Ads
for £175. http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/feb98/articles/korgtr.html

Agreed re. the Triton and also JV1080 (or 2080). Those two would make a killer
combination!
