MORE PREAMP QUESTIONS!!!!
      #163002 - 02/08/05 11:39 PM
I'm sure no one ever gets tired of pre-amp questions. I need a pre-amp that will work with my lynx two soundcard digital input. I was looking at the Art DPS two because of the price but I was wondering what the next step up would be with a digital out.

I will be mostly recording vocals now but in the future I will be recording bass guitar/keyboard/drums/guitar.

There are probably a million answers to this question, and it has been covered a million times on here before, which is probably why you haven't got any responses yet. (try a quick forum search).

We do need some more info such as budget, style, the sound you are looking for, types of mics, etc.

I am not familiar with the ART units directly, but there is lots of competition in this price range.

Mr Helix (and his twin) is right to say that there are too many answers to this question so the best bet is to balance what you buy with the rest of your system. If you spend too much money on a preamp, you'll simply expose the next weakest link in the chain so be realistic in what you buy and in what to expect from it. In my experience, there are very few preamps that are actually bad and most times there's a bigger difference to be made by hanging a duvet in the right place than by changing the preamp. The ART units I've reviewed have sounded pretty good, but if you want to go up a step or two, the SPL preamps are very nice and their Channel One has an optional S/PDIF card. I also really like the Mackie Onyx preamps and pretty much anything Focusrite makes. Even their budget Platinum models have nice sounding mic preamps. Also check out Drawmer's mid-priced preamps as I feel these are much underrated.

Paul, how about the Studio Projects VT-1 and PreSonus BlueTube DP? Do you know anything about them? I want to get a little tube-feeling in my vocal-recording.

Have you considered the Mindprint TRIO? It is priced right and does offer a host of connection options that make it a nice front end to any soundcard.

Yep to many to mention.

I have a Focusrite Session Pack with the digital expansion, total price £1400. Is fantastic for vocals, and everything else that goes through it. Zero noise loads and loads of volume. Also has a compressor for extra zing.

The digital board turns it into a stereo analogue to digital convertor aswell, so you could add a stereo mixer to your setup and use the preamp at the same time.

I agree with Paul about weak links in a chain, but if you put a quality padlock at the start of your chain then every thing else will be stronger. Unless one of your links is made by Behr..... no I wont swear.
