      #358258 - 24/09/06 10:38 PM
hi, i am currently doing an essay entitled 'A Research into the development of signal and effects processing technology in audio Studios' and am trying to get some good examples of classic recordings involving classic gear. however i have come unstuck on the WEM copycat, i guess it was widely used but need a clear example of it in action back in the late 50s early 60s... can anyone point a finger?

Not wanting to help you with your homework too much but...
why not email Charlie Watkins and ask him? He started the company, his website's here
I only know because about 12 years ago I bought some excellent bass guitar cabinet designs from him. They sounded great, I used them for quite a few years. Charlie was very helpful & knowledgeable, and certainly came up with the goods. At the time I couldn't believe I was dealing with the legend - this was the same guy responsible for the "copicat" and the PA systems for classic gigs like Hendrix at Isle of White, and the Stones at Hyde Park. As far as I know he's still trading...

20 + years ago I bought a blue and grey flip top copycat from Andy's on Denmark Street. Only when I'd handed over the cash and was filling in the paperwork did they tell me it was Alex Korner's. Turns out that after his death his son was selling on a lot of his old gear, but on the condition it went to people who would use it and not collectors, hence not being told about it's provenance before buying....

Just wish I still had it...

Andy
