Focusrite Mixmaster....again
      #483491 - 09/07/07 01:37 AM
When I had my two channel Mytek A/D and Behringer DDX3216 (using it's D/A's) I had the Focusrite Mixmaster. Patching it for mastering was a little bit of a hassle, as I had the problem with looping the signal when certain settings were not right having poor monitor control. With improved plug ins such as the UAD Mastering series and Waves Mastering plug ins, I sold the Mix Master on Ebay and started using Wavelab with plug ins.

Now having a Rosetta 800 and using the Langevin Mini Massive EQ, I realized how much better good hardware is compared to the best plug ins out there. So I am getting another Mix Master for my studio. The way the optic compressor added a nice musical character while putting gel to my music is unatainable with any plug in I have ever used. It's too bad Focusrite stopped making the Mix Master. In my book you have to spend over twice the amount of the Mix Master to get anything that would sound any better. Now I will use the Mixmater as an outboard effect in Wavelab. Using hardware and software together seems to get the best results.

I too am an ex-MixMaster user who regrets selling

I sold mine for £350 absolutely mint condition, and with the optional digi-out card ..... now that Focusrite has stopped making the Mixmaster, they're very rarely offered for sale on the likes of eBay, and when they do they tend to be going for £600+ !

I loved the Mixmaster's EQ and also thought the stereo width enhancer was about the best around.

Just got the Mixmaster back in my studio and I could not be happier. The Waves and UAD mastering plug ins do not compare to what the Focusrite Mixmaster does. It sounds like it's part of the original sound and it makes your mixes more musical while still retaining the original sound. If you can get one on Ebay, I highly recommend it. I am using it as an external effect in Wavelab. I found the combination of plug ins and hardware to be the best.
