Having just complete another film I can honestly say libraries are good, but "growing your
own" is much better.
It will also teach you a lot about sound, which finding
a sample on the net, will not.
It takes a bit of creative thought and good mic
techniques help.
It is at this point that anyone brought up on instant gratification
apps, like Garageband & Acid, suddenly realise how little they actually know.
(- and how much the application does for them ! )
Using your own sounds
means any royalties are paid to you, not some anonymous corporate machine and your time is
covered in the film's budget,
- provided you don't take the michael.
It
also helps if the producer knows what they want.
Sometimes I can spend days playing
about with a noise, just for the said Producer to dismiss it. ( very rare these days, but
it happens! )
I usually create several versions of sounds so their
"highnesses" can audition them.
Giving the Producers options is always a good
thing.
Think of it as an opportunity to explore sound.....

Are you saying you charge the company
for recording a sound effect, and they accept that YOU own the copyright on it? Surely they are paying you to record sound, and that will include SFX? You could
push your argyuement to say you own copyright on the recording of the actors! Most
sound recordists I know get paid for "the shoot" and apart from the hardware they bring
there's no extra payments for recording SFX. I don't know any cameramen who get paid extra
for shooting GVs either.....

I always see foley cats running aroung in strange little recording rooms with all kinds of
rubbish and general daily items in them that they use to create their sounds. I think
that if you're interested in seriously approaching foley that you might just get into the
habit of creating and recording the effects yourself. As has been mentioned it will at
least give you a good understanding of what you can create and how to do it as well as
allowing you to get closer to what you need. But it's up to you, obviously. Liz

I work in a dubbing room a lot. We've lots of "stuff" to make foley noises. Biggest problem is convincing the cleaners not to chuck it out as rubbish!

hahaha, nah s'all safe. it's turning out quite fun, just need more
ideas and getting hold of stuff to record. We have a horrible scene to work
with, silver surfer breaks windows running down the side of a building. just getting aload
of glass sounds that sound right without even breaking anything lol.

Obviously its best to record and/or synthesise what you can yourself, but for many things
that's not always possible so that's where the libraries come in.
If you are
after a nice big pile of sfx for a reasonable price, I'd recommend checking out the Sound
Ideas XVMP3 collections:
http://www.sound-ideas.com/xvmp3.html
They're a big
bundle covering a wide variety from Sound Ideas Series x000 collections, except they are
in MP3 format so not quite as desirable in terms of quality, but they a hell of a lot
cheaper! That little bundle was indispensable when I first started out, and I still use
stuff from it for my own little projects from time to time.
