The Boxer Rebellion - Hype???
      #700960 - 23/01/09 06:31 PM
Hi there,

The "PR" story of the "unsigned"(once signed I know) Boxer Rebellion outselling Coldplay and Kings of Leon says they got a free single of the week on iTunes and the groundswell of buying followed.

I'm afraid this old cynic assumes this is pure hype. Who are they managed by? Whats the true story? Or is this really the fairy story it appears to be?

I'm also interested in this, I read an article on Drowned In Sound which suggested it wasn't quite as straight forward as the coverage suggests but nothing more than that...

I dont know details, but TBR have been around a long time now, they do have a large fanbase by now I'd say.

I don't think it's that mysterious... it's a good bit of PR, written in full knowledge of the fact that most people who read it will take "unsigned" to mean four blokes playing down the Dog and Trumpet on a Weds night hoping to be discovered. Fact is of course, TBR have signed everything *but* a record deal... web design, management, studio, video production, merchandise etc etc, just that one piece of the jigsaw missing. They should be able to parlay this bit of PR into some kind of deal so good luck to 'em I guess. Oh and I assume by "outselling Coldplay" they mean in one particular week (day??) - no doubt achieved by a massive campaign targeting their fanbase (which as had already been pointed out, is no doubt decent sized, they've been around a while, fair enough). Also sounds like someone had a contact who knew someone who owed someone a favour who knew someone at iTunes... or sthg.

I had a listen, not my cuppa but they've clearly got their sights on the big arenas... in a widescreen cinemascope big u2 chorus kinda way...

Funk this, arm half due wink a trump
