Headphones for mixdown
      #78750 - 25/01/05 03:32 PM
I know you cant really mix on headphones, but I cant make any noise in my studio at the moment, and I'm after as good a pair as I can find for the moment. (Thats good in terms of flatness of frequency response.) I've bought headphones in the past that are supposed to be decent, but boost the low end too much so that when I've listen to the mix somewhere else, the bass is all but missing.I originally thought of going for the Beyer DT100s but I read a review that said the sound quality wasnt actually all that. Money's not an issue, so anyone got any advice?

i use my AKG K271STUDIO headphones for any urgent late night mixing when i have to get stuff done but can't make any noise and to my (admittedly relatively green!) ears they seem to give a pretty good image of what is going on. however if money is genuinely not an issue there's probably better options you can look at that i didn't even consider because of price considerations!

The Beyerdynamic DT100 series are great headphones for tracking as they are nicely closed back so leakage isnt a problem. They are certainly not the best choice for mixing though.

For mixing you would be better advised to look at something more open and of a higher calibre. I really like the Beyerdynamic DT860 but they are a bit more money.

Taken from another forum but i've heard elsewhere that these headphones are really good

SENNHEISER HD-650's

Yes, the top flight headphones are now mine, running directly out of my soundcard on the PC for monitoring.

The upside: I can now hear a far clearer representation of the frequencies than before.

The downside: I can now hear all the holes and weak spots in my production.

Fan-bloody-tastic headphones though: comfy as hell, clear as you like and a total revelation in terms of bringing out (and levelling out) frequencies I was barely hearing before. For example, I aired a Tribute To Wordsound mix on my show the other day, blissfully unaware that there was some nasty high frequency whistle running right through the opening track. Its most odd: if I listen on my Senn. HD-25s, it just isn't there. On the 650s though, its loud as you like. I think the open-cup design helps no end too: no bass freqs being shoved right down your ear. God bless em!

Cheers for the tip off on those HD650s, Freak. I just checked out the headroom site,

http://www.headphone.com/layout.php?specs=Y&topicID=3&subTopicID=26&produc tID=0020080650

The headphones here are described as the worlds best, which sounds good, but is that worlds best for listening pleasure, or for acurate monitoring, anyone? As you probably know, some hi-fi speakers sound absolutely gorgeous, but thats because they boost certain frequencies and add elements to make the sound nicer, etc, but they are useless for mixing. Can anyone tell me if these headphones give a really flat frequency response for accurate mixing as well as good listening quality?

Do a search in the MRT part of this forum and the old Infopop SOS forum and you'll turn up loads of discussion about this very subject (mostly in the Music and Rec Tech area).

And I'll second the suggestion of HD650s - they're a really good pair of cans. On a lower budget, HD600 or HD580 are not far behind - though you get what you pay for.

When I need more isolation than the aforementioned cans offer, I use Sony MDR-7509 but there are others that might suit you better. Headphones are a very personal thing and there are loads of recommendations in previous threads.

I wouldn't touch DT100s wth a bargepole. Or DT150s. But that's just me; other people use them and love them and if they're happy with them it doesn't matter whether or not I like them

Arguably both. They're super-accurate in a way that all but the very best speakers and rooms can only dream of, comfortable and easy to listen to for long periods.

Imo, They're not quite the best headphones in the world but you have to spend an awful lot more money to better them.

Don't forget to buy a decent headphone amp if you want to get the best out of them - plugging them into the "headphone" socket of the average bit of kit won't cut it; it'll work, but it'll work much better with a decent amp.

The best headphones I could afford were the Sennheiser HD2270's. I have nothing but good reports to make about them. Closed back is good for keeping the noise out/in, and I find they give a very good sound for the money.

I have heard my stuff out on a massive club system and it sounded great, fwiw.

DT100's sound terrible IMO.

I can vouch for these too. They are the best headphones I have used. All the way down to 16hz. Joy.
