I get my cultural information about the USA
mainly from comic strips. And this year, I detect that:
(a) It's apparantly
still required to say "Happy Holidays" rather than "Merry Christmas" (from Jewish pressure
rather than Muslim or other?) but:
(b) It's apparantly now acceptable to mock
this.
I'm not seeing as much Christmas-denial from looney British councils this

If I was not 100% sure
that was tongue in cheek, I'd quote that to the bank from what seems to be regarded as one
of the more fundamentalist regimes in the middle east who just sent me a Xmas card.

Just in case you were serious:
On a forum based in a predominantly Christian
country no. Muslims also believe in Jesus. Either way this is just a good will message
aimed at all regardless of religion or creed at the end of the year and should be taken as
such.
I would not take offence at a Muslim spreading a message of peace and joy to me during
Ramadan, or for that matter a Hindu at Diwali, a Jewish person at Hanukkah or an Irishman
on payday...
Merry Christmas, a happy New Year and a sincere thank you to EVERYONE from this
audio-loving Atheist.

OK. So YOU don't feel marginalised, I shall water down MY

We just received a seasonal gift from an American relative who had obviously
organised it on line. It is a very nice selection of cheeses from ultra posh and
frightfully British cheese purveyors Paxton & Whitfield (suppliers of cheese to Her
Majesty etc.). And the card reads 'Happy Holidays'! I wish I had been a fly on the wall
when they wrote that one out in their best hand. I can almost hear someone saying "that is
not how one pronounces tomato, its tomato as in 'art' not tomato is in 'mate'"... But I've
obviously got this wrong. I thought Americans said happy holidays because they took
Thanksgiving (a splendid institution) more seriously than Christmas? Whatever.
Happy Holidays etc....

Had this thread pointed out to me and since christianity in all its assorted forms is
globally one of the minor sects, plus as has already been pointed out here the UK may in
theory be a Christian country, practising christians are very much in the minority, i find
it odd to see this.
And since those of us who dont happen to adhere to
christian beliefs already have to tolerate the "traditional" christian holidays
conveniently stapled over every other religious feast, it does seem rather inappropriate
to be bombarded with gratuitous religious messages on a music tech site.
But
there again, there is already rather a lot of hypocrisy going on here.
Happy
holidays to you all.
Can we assume there will be similar announcements for
the religious holidays of the major religions?

Merry Xmas everyone.
I'm an atheist. And I have two young kids and we all love
Christmas and will do the whole thing (except go to any churches, obviously!).
Xmas was hijacked by Christians anyway - no-one knows when Jesus was born (assuming he
existed) - and is based on a mishmash of older ceremonies including pagan winter solstice
rites, the Norse festival of Yule, and the Roman Saturnalia. We've been doing this for a
lot longer than 2,000 years.
So whatever you call it, have a good one. For
Mithras' sake.

Sorry to do this Ivan, but I find your post similarly odd. The English
tradition of early winter revelry, as I have already obliquely attempted to point out,
predates Christianity. For the time being, it is, owing to the cultural impact
of many centuries of a past where Christianity has had a strong influence, often
summarised with its language. Who knows this festival may even be older than
Bhuddism!? Quote IvanSC:
