I think we'll need a lot more info before we can give a sensible response...

... for instance, are you looking for a vocal mic or an instrument mic?

If vocal, male or female singer, style of music, shouter or crooner etc?

If instrument, then what instrument in particular?

We're always happy to help, but at the moment your question is a bit like "What's the best form of transport?"

I'm looking to capture an overall sense of the environment, so that's the band and the crowd. I'm doing it so that the listener will have a feel of them being there (presence).

Small gig = Any band performing at any local venue

Ah! OK so this is to record....

I don't know what your budget is so apologies if I suggest anything too pricey.

To get the"I was there" feel you'll need something with an open and reasonably neutral sound - and of course you'll need a stereo mic or a matched pair.

There are scores of mics that meet these requirements, but from experience for this type of work I'd recommend a matched-pair of Rode NT5s in ORTF config or a Rode NT4 stereo mic.

I've had very good results with the NT4 for both concerts and birdsong - I'll literally turn my head or look over my shoulder when sounds are at the edges of the soundfield, the sense of location is that good.

You'll need a decent shockmount though and positioning is crucial to get the right balance to engender the sense of 'being there'.

Incidentally, I'm assuming you've thought through and covered-off the copyright issues...
