Here's hoping for a happy ending to this one.

What we need now is a 'pledge' site for us to offer money for either :

a) a reward for information leading to recovery
or
b) a hit on the b'stard who took it ... (gear + head being proof of recovery)

I feel for the guy, but at the risk of sounding callous, what's the point of owning gear of this quality and not insuring it?

Sure, the guitar's irreplaceable. But two new Les Pauls would have softened the blow...

The guy has been given at least one LP on permanent loan until /if his turns up, and a few luthiers have said they will make him a new one to his spec at cost price, Which i suppose softens the blow a little.

Still feel for the guy though, the last thing i saw on Fbook was that people were putting out adverts saying they had his guitar for sale using pics he had released, to which he took great umbridge.

Alot of viral symathy for this guy by all accounts, allthough that gear is hotter than a Camels arm pitt, and i doubt it will surface anytime soon TBH.

I was talking to the guys at my local guitar shop yesterday. Turns out they've had three guitars stolen this year so far, including an SG that was associated with a well known band. Total value about £8k, which is a big hit for that size of business. How did it happen? Busy Saturdays, three or four kids sussing the place out over a number of weeks, then on the day a few of them cause a diversion, keeping the staff busy whilst one looks for his moment, swipes a pre determined instrument and calmly walks out. So was this loss insured? Apparently it is impossible to get insurance against theft of guitar stock within the shop premises during opening times. Stock in transit, yes. On the premises when the doors are open, no.

So what are your options I asked? They really don't want to ruin the vibe of the shop by chaining everything up and making everyone ask for permission to look at every guitar. Neither do they want to detract from the instruments on sale by attaching electronic tags to them all (in any case expensive to set up and arguably offering limited defense against a determined shoplifter - foil lined coats etc). So to try and defend themselves they have taken two measures. The first is long standing, To never have any empty stands out on the sales floor. That way its far easier for the staff to keep track of everything not on a stand i.e. being looked or played at by a customer, and quickly notice if there is a stand unaccounted for. The second is they now employ another person who is not sales staff but just there to be affable, play a bit of guitar as and when he feels like it and keep a watchful eye on everyone not talking to one of the sales assistants at any given time, and of course the door!

I just thought what a great stand to take in refusing to let the low life ruin it for everybody else. But it does seem guitar shops have good reason to be cautious and we should all understand that, and cut the decent ones some slack for any precautions they may deem necessary to put in place.

Is there any news about the stolen LP this thread was highlighting?
