Least noisy pickups
      #941568 - 17/09/11 10:29 PM
Hey guys,

Been having a problem lately. I noticed that my guitar is becoming (or was, maybe I sharpened my hearing) noisy. I own a Schecter Blackjack C7 discontinued model with Seymour Duncan's. Now I'm thinking of changing the pickups or even the guitar itself. So all the guitar players, which pickups do you think are the least noisy and has this nice clarity to them?

Thank you

EMG... you'll never regret the buying them, and they might be the best decision you've yet made on a music related purchase.

More information is needed Nightredt,

When you say your guitar is noisey what do you mean?
It might not be your pick ups that are causing the noise, it could be a bad contact on the input jack or a bad guitar lead or a host of other issue's that should be discounted before you start changing pickups.

Humbuckers are inherently noise cancelling (this is quite a genral statement but bear with me) ie they "Buck" (stop) the Hum that is normally associated with single coil pickups.

Could you give a description of the "noise" you are encountering and when it happens. The more information you can give the better we can advise you on how the get rid of it.

Sorry for the lack of description. I can't really explain to be honest. I noticed it when I record. the sound is really muddy, especially on the high end. It might be just the way the pickups sound, it's playable and they are way better than some cheap models (e.g. Ibanez RGA7 is worse, with stock pickups). I think I just want something different. Something really modern and compressed, therefore am asking for your opinions. And please give the models too, not only the manufacturer!! e.g. heard that EMG HZ are a bunch of crap!

How are you recording your guitar?

Does it sound Muddy when you play through an amp? Also do you know if pick up height is adjusted properly, if you are lacking a a bit of top end you could try raising the pick up height a little on one side (ie the high/thin E string side) and see if that gives you a better sound.

Is your guitar a 7 string? because this may limit the pickup choice.

Sorry, I should have been more specific. If you are going down the EMG route, it's best to use their active pickup line. The EMG 81/85 pickups are great for heavy distortion, if you want a more flexible pickup, the 89 is superb, switchable between humbucker and single coil, great clean tones and very nice distortion.

A quick check on their site reveals EMG only offer the 81 for 7 string active humbuckers, or the 60 or 70, or each of these in the X series which non active.

Ack... didn't notice it was for a 7 stringed instrument. Mea culpa. I think the x series is still active, though.

Ahh they may very well be active, getting confused as they say they sound like a cross between Active and passive.

It seems the stock pups are Seymour Duncan SH-4 and SH-1, which are not that bad but i suppose it depends on what style of music you play. I've heard of Metal heads swapping these out for and 81 and a 60 but not actually heard a set myself.

It's not something as simple as a flat battery is it?

Good thought Sam, but the guitar in question has passive pick ups in as stock, so no battery..... Unless he has the ATX model which has active pick ups, but this is still in production and he says he has a discontinued model which I presume is the Passive pick up model.

I get the feeling it's the way the OP is recording his guitar which is the problem but we need to know what gear he is using and how he is using it AND if it sounds "muddy" through his Amp.

Hey guys,

No, my pickups are passive, Yes - It's a 7 string.:) I'm recording it via Line in with my Tascam US-100. When modelling, mostly I get a very annoying hiss in the high end, the same happens with the amplifier too. It's like an uncontrolled frequency which gets amplified alot.

you sure you're recording thru a line in, and not the guitar/bass instrument input??

Are you sure this isn't a grounding issue? ie the grounding wire from the pickups has wriggled free somehow. I myself had a issue like that of sorts which was driving me crazy until I had it checked out for a MOT of sorts.

I wouldn't expect those pickups in that guitar to be noisy. I would certainly second the suggestion to check the wiring.
