Looking for a live sound mixing desk add to my PA system, can anyone recommend a desk with
good reviews/personal opinions for under £1000
Must be 16 channels minimum

Given the info you've specified, I would be looking at the Allen & Heath Mixwizard 16,
and the higher spec Allen & Heath Zed range consoles. We could do with more
information though - how many auxes do you need? Pre/post fade? Would you like internal fx
or do you use your own outboard? Do you need groups? However, A&H Mix Wiz
16 should do nicely - 16 channels, 6 auxes (i think - 4 pre/2post), the new ones have
internal fx although i've not had chance to use them.

I'm with Stef re recommendations and the things you haven't mentioned that you
want/need.
The A&H ZED420 is within budget and the ZED428 just over. I
have a 420 and am very pleased with it. It just 'works' at all levels.
I've
used a Mixwizard several times - that's a great desk too, with the advantage of on-board
effects and being rack-mountable.
Don't forget to budget for a decent
flightcase too...

If you don't need/want groups, the A&H ZED24 is a bit of a bargain at £522.
Note that all the desks recommended so far don't have built-in FX. But you can easily
hit eBay and get a decent second-hand FX processor for under a ton, which is about what it
costs to get a desk with built-in FX anyway. It'll sound better, and you can use it on
every desk in the future.

The
A&H MixWizard 16 has internal FX.

True; but it isn't so comprehensively specc'd as
what's been mentioned - eg one swept-mid rather than two and four auxes rather than six.
(By shopping around I got my 420 for £749 last summer.)
... but we're all
guessing really until the OP produces a more detailed shopping-list.
I'd agree that if money is tight then the ZED24 IS a very good buy.

I'm very happy with my Mackie Onyx 1640i. Doesn't have built in effect but I use my mac
through the firewire connection into my DAW or Apples Mainstage to get effects. I think
this is better. It means using parallel compression if you need it but I prefer that
anyway!

Hey, cheers for the replies. The desk needs to be somewhere between 12 - 16 channels. I
do not need groups or inserts. I do need auxilieries for stereo graphics and reverb but
nothing other than that. Nothing major, it's for a 3 man band.
EDIT: Need
to be able to PFL on this desk aswell, and by graphics I mean a frequency boost/cut unit.
I also need to have 2 mixes available.

The ZED-24 desk seems to have what I want for a reasonable price (unless I'm
mis-understood) but I can't find any reviews for it :L
Any reviews to back up
this desk? Hate buying without having a professional's opinion

The ZED-24 falls into that odd niche between "major product" and "consumer/prosumer".
It's too expensive for someone to randomly buy on a whim, but it's not as fully-featured
as things like the ZED-4** ones so it won't be sent out for reviews. Not many people
dislike A&H products though.
Alternatively, you could always go
second-hand. Checking the SoS Readers' Ads, there's a flightcased Mackie Onyx 1640
(condition described as "immaculate") for £600 which would do you nicely. Even allowing
for carting from Glasgow to wherever you live, it'll still be well under budget.

use parcel2go and it'll only cost £15 tops
if you do it without insurance!

Yeah Ed, I saw that too. Probably
more expensive and less channels than he needs, though.
