Addition to the mastering rack...
      #976528 - 18/03/12 11:43 AM
I now have an HCL Varis compressor in the rack, first impression is I like it a lot, flexible and stepped/switched throughout. (It's a Vari-Mµ design)

Oooh! NICE. Was that the one that was up for sale in readers ads?

Love things like that.

It was the one in readers ads, it is absolutely spotless like brand new. It sounds sublime. Pass through with no GR gives a slight deep bass enhancement and a gentle 3D mix widening effect with a silky smooth presence like a 1-2dB fine quality high shelf at 4kHz. It will not be right for everything but it is a nice complement to the DCL-200. Gain reduction is smooth and rounded as well even on faster settings. This is also a bit faster with a x 2 option on the attack and release settings which is great for a valve compressor as they tend to be on the slow side. This is really just a first impression as I am sure you know it takes a while to get into a bit of new gear.

It's funny I use my compressors more like EQ's tbh, I think compression is somewhat "over egged" in the realm of mastering, on occasion you are trying to get some extra punch but in the main it's the euphonic tone of a circuit you are after. Looking forwards to getting stuck in this week. Just what I wanted to add even more value to the service really.

If you fancy hearing something run through it Jack just fling me a track over. Just a straight pass with 1dB GR, no sweat. Works especially nicely with music thats lacking a touch of detail, width - deep lows.
