Porting frequencies etc.

Hi, all, This is really a question for, Mike Senior, but I'd appreciate any help.
On the subject of ported speakers, p 48 " Mixing Secrets " , I'm just wondering
how knowing the actual porting freqency helps in the mixing process ?
Also, is
it possible to use the level meter, and spectrum analyzer in iZotope Ozone 5, in dealing
with each individual track.
Please advise. [ hope these Qs aren't too newbie
] Many thanks. Keith

As Mike explains on that page, knowing the port tuning helps to
identify which bass notes are likely to suffer from the port resonances, and you will
therefore know not to try to equalise that region because you're hearing speaker artefacts
rather than a recording problem.

Yes -- they are handy tools, and provided
you can route signals so that Ozone is looking at the specific track you're interested in,
the metering and sprectral analysis can be quite handy.

Hi, Hugh, Many thanks. So I'll be
right in thinking that the porting frequency represents a relatively stable
reference/starting point ? Cheers!
BTW, Mike, wish I'd bought the book
years ago.

I'm not one of the learned ones, but I think the porting frequency does not
represent a reference point, rather the opposite.
But someone will be along,
I'm sure, to clarify.
