In a nutshell, they don't sound that good. It's as simple as that.
They represented a good performance/price balance a number of years ago, when alternatives were like hen's teeth. Now, you can pick from a number of better sounding, comparably priced microphones.

Basically, yes.
The C1000 has it's uses [knocking in nails, assaulting intruders etc] and I've used it to good effect on otherwise-dull snares, as an 'FX' mic, live etc. It's by no means the best choice for overheads, acoustic guitar or the like though; even if you are on a budget.
