Cheers Les - all resolved now with no loss of data or life! Suspect drive is back in its box and in a cupboard and the shiny new drives are whirring away doing their backup thing like nobody's business.
The Avastor is brilliant by the way, very small, very quiet, and very fast. I might gradually replace the LaCie drives I think.
