This might just be my opinion, but I've always found it better to get a cheap valve head or combo with fewer features (for example the Epiphone Valve Junior) and add a few pedals.

I play metal with a Laney LC15 combo and a Danelectro black paisley and EQ pedal, and it's A MILLION BILLION SQUILLION times better than any cheap tranny amp for this price range

...in my opinion

And of course it depends what style of music you play and what wattage of amp is required! I wouldn't be seen dead on stage with a tiny combo for metal!
