Single bass bin question

I posted a question the other day about adding speakers and got some great help, thanks.
I use a Crown XS700 (700w 4ohm per side or 350w 8ohm per side). I am running a pair of Alesis PRO15 300w 8ohm speakers with them, but wanted to add speakers to get a fuller sound.
As space in my transport is limited, someone suggested a single bass bin, but do I connect this two one side, and how does this affect the ohms, onlu using one side. He suggested using a powered bass bin, and running it off a line out or monitor off my desk. This sounds a good idea but I am unsure if I can do this? Will it affect the speakers already connected normally?
Any help will be great.
