While DVD-A is interesting from a multichannel perspective (It supports B format), it appears that as far as word length and sample rate 16/44.1 is more then adequate as a distribution medium.

The Boston audio society demonstrated this in a paper in the AES journal before last, wherein they ABX tested SACD vs SACD via a 16 bit ADA chain.

Results at at sane listening levels were the same as random chance.

Possibly the interesting comment was that DVD-A/SACD disks tended to be recorded with more dynamic range then CDs, but that this was not due to a technical limitation but a marketing one.
