These were designed as small studio nearfield monitors.

Hugh,
My understanding is that the 3/5a was originally designed for use in 1/8th scale acoustic modeling of performance spaces and got pressed into service in OB trucks later. Is that an urban myth?
For what it's worth, I've always loved them and have a pair here. I actually used them a bit during AE22 development as a tonal balance reference.
Biggest problem with 3/5a's is their severely limited power handling. They just don't go loud enough, especially for much contemporary music, in any reasonably sized control room. Give them a compact space, a decent driving amp (not entirely sure I'd include a Quad 405 in that category, but hey), and a diet of small scale acoustic music though and, for my money, there's little better at any price.
