There's no reason why you can't learn pieces you like, but the chances are that those pieces will either be beyond your skill level or won't teach you techniques that can be applied across a wide range of styles and other pieces.

I'm currently learning the bass and have a teacher who encourages me to bring songs that I want to learn along to lessons and she'll veto them if they're beyond me or not appropriate etc.

Talk to your teacher and see if they're willing to do something similar. If they're completely against it then it might be an opportunity to look for another teacher. Music is supposed to be fun!
