I used to run an indie/punk label for six years. I found this mailing list quite useful http://groups.yahoo.com/group/indielabels/

I've never read any book about it but read loads of interviews with people who had been running indie/DIY labels.

I'd recommend reading interviews with label owners within your musical genre because each scene works slightly differently and books usually don't cover the specifics of them.

If you're into indie pop, look for articles on Rough Trade, (now defunct) Slampt and any label from the Beggars Banquet group.
