The subject of a ‘What are the best monitors for £xxx” comes up a lot in these fora. A search or two should give you some food for thought.

Don’t forget that serious outlay on monitors should really only be considered along with time and money spent on sound treatment for your listening environment. Personally I prefer a decent set of headphones to speakers, so I’d suggest that route is worth considering – especially if the budget is as tight as you suggest.
