From someone who is now a multi-gold producer and artist :

"Well of course some of these tape (*) levels are low - you record the sounds as you'd expect them to show up on the mixer and leave the chanels at 0db!"

(*) tape = 1" 24 track!

Thankfully, after 'going digital' (and some strange arugments) he now understands what gain structure is ...
