Well, seems like you are agreeing with me that this "sign" might indicate someting "great" after all, i.e.: that there is currently a great threat to the CD format. The reasons of course are complex, but very real.

Just picking up your comment and following the logic

I agree, it might indeed. Such a wonderfully subjective word 'might'. Something might mean something, then again it might not.

But for what it's worth, I do believe that CD has had it's day. Without any form of copy protection it's too vulnerable to piracy. I don't have any problem with CD audio quality, Hugh has made the case elsewhere that 16bit 44.1KHz is more than satisfactory for a domestic listening environment, and the numbers add up in the real world. But if the industry is to continue in any viable form, I can see the need for a replacement format for CD. For marketing reasons it would need to be seen as a step up from CD quality, so I suggest a minimum of 20 bit 48KHz (improved dynamic range and compatibility with video standards) and delivered on a small solid state device, something similar to a phone SIM card with the data stored on solid state memory and with a unique ID code hard coded into the card as a key for the data. Build in some additional code for licensing for mobile devices, say two or three transferable mobile licences periodically verified during synchronisation, and you have the building blocks for a medium for delivering high quality audio with security on a hardware device that can have packaging with value added, just like a CD or vinyl album.
