I think I like most of the names you mention, even if a couple are really only renowned off the back of one or two hits.
Not true in the case of the Pet Shop Boys of course .. who crafted many hits and a strong unique identifiable sound.
Personally I've never had a single number 1 record - have you ?
+1 on the Pet Shop Boys - tho I'm not a huge fan (it's a genre thing) I can recognise damn good hooks, excellent production, fine live shows, and a superb and very clever image, when I see one. As far as 'pop' goes, they do it [ ****** ] well. Respect.
(As it happens, I do have a gold record on my wall for the one project I was ever involved in which did, much to our surprise, get to number one. Let's just say we were all in shock for a while. It's never happened again, and I don't expect it to, either)
- exactly Tom tho ... u've done the graft and got the gold disc - and know what to respect.
As it happens - I also do not have the Pet Shop Boys on my ipod - but for a moment, in their time - they were number one, and as we've pointed out - carved a VERY recognizable sound and penned many hit tunes.
I'm not sure anyone really reveres them, as such, but respect where it's due.
Also - I'm not saying I revere Paul Young or Alison Moyet - but with their talents - again (of course in a far lesser way than the Pet Shop Boys, and their producers) - they also cut through and established themselves as recognizable names.
All to easy to poke fun .. and if you've achieved even the level they have - then, perhaps you have the right .. but usually I find, people who have grafted to achieve that level - in any genre - be they 'cool' or not - are actually - the last people to belittle the accomplishments of others.
