I'd like to pick up an all-tube, very low watt combo (or head/cab) for recording and practice at home. I live in an apartment building with thin walls and I work late most days, so good, low-volume output is sadly as important as good tone.
I've tried a Vox Lil' Night Train and I loved how it played and sounded on the normal channel, less so on the bright. I've also read (in a 2000 review in SOS) about the Cornford Harlequin which sounded perfect for my needs albeit quite expensive. Are there any others I should consider?
I'm less worried about clean sounds since I don't mind DI'ing and using an amp modeller for those. It's the bluesy crunch and distortion tones I'm looking for. I'm not really a metaller so crazy overdrive isn't needed. I mostly play blues and classic rock and a bit of soul & R&B.
I really want to mic this up. I've tried speaker simulators and been less than pleased with the results, though they do at a pinch for late-night work.
Any suggestions?
Thanks!
