It's good. Is it as user-friendly? Jury's out on that one, but although it's miles better than it used to be, general opinion is that it's still tricky for a newbie. There's plenty of people saying "I set this up for my 80-year-old Aunt Maud and she's never had any problems", but they kind of gloss over the fact that *they* did the setup! If Aunt Maud needed to do the setup herself, this might be a different story.

To be fair, installing Windows from scratch is not really a mission for the newbie either. But you'll usually buy a PC pre-loaded with Windows, whereas installing Linux is usually something you need to do yourself.

If you use WINE (WINdows Emulator), most Windows programs will work on Linux. But some won't. In particular, I expect games will be less happy about it than office apps would be.
