What you can do with two SM57's
      24/06/11 07:08 PM
Since the regulars see the fatal words 'sm57' continuously on this forum, I thought I would post a link to a song I recorded and mix for my friend using two Shure SM57's on his acoustic guitar and one on his electric guitar:

It wasn't an experiment. It was what I could afford and work with. If you know the basics around any microphone, you will get a sound you can work with. There wasn't any major EQ'in apart from rolling off the bass and abit of reverb, compressing etc.

I don't want to make this a big essay, so I'll try and keep it short and snappy:

Mics: Shure SM57 x2 for Acoustic guitar (Tanglewood)
Shure SM57 x1 Electric Guitar (Fender 72 Thinline)
Bass (Fender Jazz) was DI’d through an Ashdown Combo
Beginning soundscape is from Logic Pros free licensed media files.

Room: Bedroom’s and Spare Room Studio with light dampening.

DAW: ProTools LE + Mbox 2 Interface

Monitors: Mackie MR5's

Uh-Ohs: Short of time when recording, would have liked to re-recorded the acoustic guitar as it’s out of sync with the click track in some areas.

Here is an image I took of how I setup the SM57's. My friend setup two Rhode NT5's like this and it sounded wonderful and apparently use this technique in Abbey Road? :S

So to those short of cash or just wondering will a SM57 do the job??......Yes

Oh and any comments on my recording from any pro's would be great
