much excellent advice so far. the only thing i can add is to suggest getting dave stewart's book on learning to read music. short paperback, written in the inimitable dave stewart manner of irreverence and deep knowledge. btw, this is the dave stewart of prog rock fame (egg, hatfield and the north, national health, bill bruford band, ....). great chap....
