iPhone registration

So, Mrs Mixedup just got herself a shiny new iPhone and asked me to activate it for her, which I've duly done. Nice bit of technology. Well deigned and nice interface. BUT...

Is it just me, or does it seem a little crazy to have a phone with internet connection and then require you to connect to a computer with iTunes software to go through a lengthy registration and software update process?

Why can't the phone do the registration and software updates itself (like my HTC can, for example)? Not a very 'smart' process for a smartphone, that...
