Freeware sample/sound player

I've sold one of my cheap controller keyboards on eBay to a newbie who is asking about what program he can use to play sounds with. I don't think he wants a DAW, just a cheap or free standalone program with bread-and-butter sounds that accepts MIDI signals. I don't know much about that end of the market -- can anyone recommend some freeware program along these lines?
