Although you could get a new Imac then spend £500 on an interface? Maybe a Saffire Pro 56...ok you don't need 8 inputs, but you do get decent pre amps, with some pre amp emulation on 2 channels.

Also if you find a student to take into the mac store you'll get 13% off.

Otherwise I think RME and some pre amps are probably your best bet.
