If it costs money to distribute your music, why would you?

I get this article as part of a daily email subscription I have with ASCAP. And the content yesterday included a link to outside article showing that distributing your music digitally, though less costly than CD (really a marketing item these days) still places a financial burden on a musician/composer or band. Other than increasing exposure why else would you do it?

I ask because I, coming from a sales and marketing management position (my day job ) at a software firm can't find a justifiable economic reason to sell music for my band. It seems it would be better just to give the recordings away while retaining rights!
