They aren't just semitone markings... there is some pretty clever software at work in there that (if the mode is selected) will always make sure your glide ends up on a chromatically accurate tone rather than somewhere just off. It means you can gliss naturally and smoothly up or down to a given note and always know you are going to hit it.
If you are interested in this kind of controller, a rather cheap way to try it out is to buy the MorphWiz app for the iPad (developed, as it happens by Mr Rudess' software company) it pretty much acts in the same way as the continuum (albeit without the pressure sensitivity and in a much smaller form factor - nonetheless it is still a rather cool app and capable of really expressiveness)
