Yes, it was worded to me as "what you _don't_ play is as important as what you _do_ play".
Also in an improvisation group I used to be part of, it was pointed out that "there's no such thing as a wrong note, just how you get out of it"
Years ago I recorded a song and made what I initially thought was a mistake. Playing the song back I realised the mistake was the best bit of the track
